What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a collection of dental procedures and treatments that are primarily designed to improve the appearance of your teeth. From removing stains to fixing chipped teeth, cosmetic procedures can undo damage that affects your smile.
Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures and Treatments
Some procedures primarily serve a cosmetic purpose:
- Teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening is designed to remove stains and provide dramatic results in a short period of time.
- Veneers. Porcelain veneers attach to the front side of the teeth that are visible when you smile, concealing imperfections and providing a uniform appearance.
- Cosmetic bonding. Tooth colored composite material can be applied to the teeth to restore the natural shape.
Other procedures can improve your appearance as well as your oral health, such as:
- Invisalign. Clear aligners can straighten teeth for a better looking smile and improved oral health.
- Crowns. A tooth with extensive decay or damage can be restored with a crown, a tooth-shaped cover placed over the tooth.
- Bridges. A dental bridge can replace a missing tooth using the existing teeth on each side of the gap for support.
- Dental Implants. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically placed in the jaw, providing a secure anchor to replace one or more missing teeth.
Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry
- Confidence boost. Improving the appearance of your smile with cosmetic dentistry can help you feel more confident.
- Prepare for special events. Cosmetic dentistry can help you prepare for special events such as weddings and photo sessions where lifelong memories are created and photographed.
- Healthier teeth. Many cosmetic dental procedures also improve your oral health by repairing damage and restoring chewing capabilities.
- Positive life changes. Cosmetic dentistry can give you the confidence you need to make positive changes in your life, from personal to professional.

Get Started With Your Smile Transformation Today
Dental implants are artificial teeth that replace missing or damaged teeth. If you need to have one or more teeth replaced to restore your smile and dental function, implants are the highest quality option available in dentistry.
If you’re considering dental implants, you may be wondering if you are a candidate for them in the first place. There are specific criteria that must be met for a person to be eligible for a dental implant restoration. Learn how to find out if you qualify.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants consist of a titanium post that replaces the natural root of a tooth. The implant is surgically placed in your jaw where it fuses with the bone. The bond formed between the implant and bone is extremely strong, providing a solid anchor for a dental crown. The chewing strength is equivalent to your natural teeth.
Multiple dental implants can be placed in strategic locations in the jaw to support a bridge, partial dentures, or full arch dentures according to your needs. You can replace anywhere from a single tooth to a full mouth of missing teeth with a fully functional, natural looking prosthetic.
Benefits of Dental Implants:
- Natural function. Dental implants allow you to eat the foods you enjoy. They function as closely as possible to your natural teeth, more so than any other dental prosthetic.
- Natural appearance. A dental implant looks natural because it is anchored in your jaw the same way that your own teeth are. Quality materials resemble tooth enamel for a realistic appearance.
- Prevents bone loss in the jaw. The way that dental implants fuse with the jaw bone prevents bone loss from occurring as it would in the absence of teeth. This keeps your jaw strong and maintains your facial structure.
- No negative effect on healthy teeth. Dental implants do not rely on healthy teeth for support, as opposed to bridges and clip on dentures that can cause damage over time.
Candidacy Criteria:
- Good Overall Health: A person with good overall health is an ideal candidate for dental implants. Good health improves the osseointegration (fusion with the bone) process and speeds healing and recovery.
- Adequate Bone Density: It is necessary to have sufficient bone width and density to place a dental implant. If one or more teeth have been missing for more than a few weeks or months, the slow process of resorption (dissolving of the bone) will be in progress, meaning you may not be an ideal candidate for dental implants.
- Healthy Gums: To be a good candidate for dental implants you must have healthy gums. Patients with signs of gum disease are not immediately ready for dental implants.
- Commitment to Oral Hygiene: It is imperative that you keep your teeth clean after getting dental implants. The success of your restoration depends on maintaining good oral health.
Consultation and Evaluation:
To determine if you are a candidate for dental implants, you’ll need an evaluation performed by a dentist who has experience with implant placement. The evaluation will include dental X-rays to assess the density of your jaw.
If it is determined that your jaw is not ready to support a dental implant, you may still be eligible after some preparatory procedures. Bone grafting is a common solution for bone loss. It involves the placement of a bone fragment on top of the existing bone that encourages regeneration of bone tissue.
Other preparatory procedures may include treatment for gum disease and extraction of teeth that are too decayed or damaged to be saved.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants
How long do dental implants last?
Once they have fully fused with the bone, dental implants can last a lifetime. The bond between the implant and bone is solid and stands the test of time, as long as oral health and overall health is maintained.
What type of anesthesia is used for dental implant placement?
Dental implants can be placed with local anesthesia in most cases. Patients who are anxious or those receiving multiple implants in a single appointment may be more comfortable with some light sedation.

In home renovation, the term “veneer” means to improve a surface by covering it with a more desirable or decorative outer layer. In dentistry, veneers are essentially the same thing, but for your teeth. Thin layers of porcelain are attached to the front sides of the most visible front teeth, concealing imperfections and giving you a more natural and improved smile.
If you’re considering dental veneers, you may be wondering how long they will last. When you make an investment in your smile, you want to know that it’s worth it. Learn how many years you can expect to get out of a set of dental veneers.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are covers for your front row of teeth. Unlike a crown that covers the entire tooth, veneers only attach to the front of teeth that have a flat surface. They wrap slightly around the sides and biting edge of the teeth. The purpose of veneers is to conceal imperfections and provide a uniform look.
Types of Veneers
There are 3 main types of dental veneers:
- Porcelain. The highest quality veneers are made of porcelain. It is durable and closely resembles natural tooth enamel.
- Composite. Veneers can be made of composite resin, the same material that is used to fill cavities and repair damaged teeth.
What Can Veneers Hide?
- Stains. Veneers can conceal stains on teeth that can’t be removed with whitening treatments.
- Gaps. Veneers can close gaps between teeth without having to undergo orthodontic treatment.
- Mild misalignment. Teeth that are slightly crooked or misaligned can be corrected with veneers.
- Chips. Veneers can cover chips in teeth that are small enough that they don’t need restorative treatment.
- Uneven lengths. Teeth that are uneven due to wear or damage can be made to look even with veneers.
Average Lifespan for Veneers by Type
- Porcelain veneers: 10-15 years. Porcelain veneers have the longest life expectancy of any material because it is extremely strong and holds up to biting and chewing.
- Composite veneers: 5-7 years. Composite veneers are not as strong as porcelain and more likely to chip, stain, and wear down over time.
Getting the Most Out of Your Veneers
Here are some tips for helping your veneers last as long as possible:
- Don’t bite or chew hard or crunchy foods with your veneers. Use your back teeth to chew these types of foods.
- Don’t chew on non-food items, including ice, fingernails, pen caps
- Brush your veneers as well as your teeth twice a day.
- See your dentist twice a year for routine cleanings.
- Wear a mouthguard for playing sports.
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Veneers
Are dental veneers covered by insurance?
Veneers are considered to be a cosmetic procedure, so dental insurance doesn’t cover them. Financing is available to make the cost more affordable so that you can pay for them gradually over time.
Am I a candidate for dental veneers?
To be a candidate for dental veneers your teeth must first be healthy, meaning any needed restorative procedures must be done first. Veneers are most effective for mild to moderate imperfections in your teeth. For severe misalignment or large gaps between teeth, orthodontic treatment may be necessary.

Dental implants provide a replacement for teeth that are missing or can’t be saved with restorative procedures. Superior to other dental prosthetics in a variety of ways, implants are considered the gold standard. If you’re considering dental implants or if you have an upcoming appointment to receive one or more implants, this guide will provide you with the information you need.
How Dental Implants Work
Dental implants are surgically placed in the jaw bone to replace the natural roots of missing teeth. An implant is essentially a small titanium screw that fuses with the bone to form a secure anchor for a dental prosthetic. A single implant can replace one tooth by supporting a dental crown. Multiple implants can support a bridge or dentures to replace anywhere from a few to all of your teeth. Doctors at Kalmar Family Dentistry have relationships with local oral surgeons or periodontists in order to complete this process properly.
The Dental Implant Process
In most cases, the process for getting dental implants requires multiple steps over the course of months.
- Consultation and Evaluation. The process begins with a consultation and evaluation to determine if you are interested in dental implants and whether or not they are the best tooth replacement option for you.
- Preparatory Procedures. If the current state of your oral health is not ideal for dental implants, some preparatory procedures may be necessary. For example, if you have bone loss in your jaw, bone grafting may be required to regenerate bone tissue.
- Placement of the Implants. If or when your jaw is ready to receive it, your dental implant can be surgically placed. You may receive one or multiple implants in a single appointment.
- Adding the Abutment. Typically 4-6 months after the placement of your implant, it has time to fuse with the bone and the abutment can be added. This is the post that connects the implant to the prosthetic/crown. Prior to doing this an impression or digital scan is completed in order to communicate with the dental laboratory the exact position of the implant(s) and the surrounding teeth.
- Attaching the Permanent Prosthetic. A few weeks after, the abutment and the permanent prosthetic can be attached.
The Procedure for Placing an Implant
For the dental implant placement procedure, local anesthesia is used to numb the nerves. The implant is carefully and precisely placed in the jaw at the correct angle and depth. The gum tissue is closed over the implant to allow proper healing.
Recovery After Dental Implant Placement
After dental implant placement you may need 24-48 hours to rest and recover, depending on how you feel. It can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks for the gum tissue to fully heal. It is best to eat a soft diet for the first few days to a week after your dental implant placement procedure. Over the course of the next few months the implant will fuse with the bone to form a solid bond.
Completing Your Restoration
When the process of osseointegration (fusion with the bone) is complete, the abutment and permanent restoration can be attached, and you’ll have a fully restored smile with a natural appearance and function.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants
How long do dental implants last?
Once a dental implant fuses with the jaw bone, it can last for the rest of your life. The prosthetic portion attached to the implant may need to be replaced over time as the wear and tear of chewing takes its toll. Although dental implants will not decay they can be affected by gum/bone problems, periodontal disease, and need to be maintained properly to get the longest life of them.
Are dental implants worth it?
Dental implants provide a look and function that rivals your natural teeth. They are anchored in your jaw for a secure hold, allowing you to eat the foods you enjoy.

Dentistry offers a variety of options for replacing lost or damaged teeth. Whether you have a tooth that needs to be extracted due to extensive decay or you have one or more missing teeth, dental prosthetics can replace them.
One option for tooth replacement is a dental bridge. A dental bridge can replace one or a few adjacent teeth with a single prosthetic. If you’re considering getting a dental bridge, you may have some questions. How long do dental bridges last? Is a dental bridge the best way to replace missing teeth? Here’s what you need to know.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a one-piece row of artificial teeth with crowns on one or both ends. The crowns fit over the healthy teeth on either side of the gap where teeth are missing. Pontics are the artificial teeth centered between the crowns that sit on top of the gums.
Other types of dental bridges attach to the remaining teeth with metal clasps, these are removable bridges.
A bridge can also be supported by dental implants.
Average Lifespan of a Dental Bridge
A dental bridge can last an average of 5 to 15 years. The wide range in longevity is due to the numerous factors that affect the lifespan of a dental bridge. Each case is different, and patients will have varying experiences and degrees of success with bridges. Many patients will get 20 years or more out of their dental bridge.
Factors That Affect the Lifespan of a Dental Bridge
- Upkeep and maintenance. A dental bridge will last longer with good care and maintenance. This means going to the dentist regularly, every 3-6 months for dental cleanings and oral examinations, based on the condition of your oral health.
- Oral hygiene. Another important factor is oral hygiene. Keeping your natural teeth and your bridge free of plaque will help it last longer and improve your oral health.
- Eating habits. The more frequently you eat hard or chewy foods, the sooner your bridge may wear out. Over time the force of chewing takes its toll on the bridge and the support teeth. Chewing on non-food items can also accelerate wear.
- Teeth grinding. Chronic teeth grinding can wear your bridge out more quickly. Wearing a mouthguard will prevent damage.
Alternative Tooth Replacement Options
When it comes to replacement teeth, dental implants are considered to be the gold standard. While a dental bridge is effective, a dental implant offers a more natural function and appearance. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically placed in your jaw. It provides a secure anchor for a crown to replace a single tooth. Multiple implants can support a bridge or dentures. If you’re looking for the highest quality tooth replacement option, you may want to consider dental implants.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Bridges?
Am I a candidate for a dental bridge?
One advantage of dental bridges is that more patients are candidates for the procedure. There are fewer oral and structural requirements to be eligible to receive a dental bridge. If you need to have one or more teeth replaced, you are a likely candidate.
How can I get the most out of my dental bridge?
Your dental bridge will last longer if you take good care of your teeth and see your dentist at regular intervals. It also helps to be mindful of your eating and chewing habits, as well as managing teeth grinding.

About the Cow Harbor Race
The Cow Harbor Race has been held in Northport since 1977 when John Rakucewicz, a local citizen and businessman, first came up with the idea. As an avid runner he felt that the natural beauty of the area made it an excellent location for a charity race, and the town recommended combining it with the Grand Old-Fashioned Cow Harbor Day Parade which had been established just a few years earlier. The race has been held annually with only a few exceptions over the past 40+years.
Run or Walk for Charity
The Cow Harbor Race is a charity run/walk that supports the Special Olympics and other local organizations including the Northwell Health Foundation, the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry, Save the Sound, the Northport American Legion Post 694, and the Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary. Dental jewelry, known as a tooth gem, attaches to the surface of your enamel and adds a sparkle to your smile.
The idea may be fun and exciting. But, before you go through with it, know the risks. Dental jewelry is not conducive to your oral health and it can leave you with a long list of dental issues that need to be addressed.
What is Dental Jewelry?
Dental jewelry refers to small gems that are attached to the tooth’s surface using a strong adhesive. They aren’t permanent but will remain in place for at least 6 months or so, generally longer.
Some take the bedazzling a step further and adhere gems to a dental crown and cap the entire tooth — or even a row of teeth.
Made famous by celebrities and influencers over the last few years, the trend has taken off. Unfortunately, as many seek to have gems of their own, they fail to realize the dangers of adhering them to teeth.
Dangers of Dental Jewelry
Tooth enamel has to be etched for a tooth gem to be placed properly and securely. This creates a better grip using the bonding agent. While the compromised area is only as big as the gem or gems used, the idea of scraping away this strong protective outer layer of your tooth is a bit concerning.
Your enamel is what shields your teeth from decay. When you start removing it, your teeth can be at greater risk for decay and enamel erosion.
A few other dangers of dental jewelry include:
- An increased risk of tooth decay resulting from trapped food particles and bacteria under and around the gem.
- Bad breath due to the buildup of plaque and bacteria.
- Discoloration that is caused by the inability to care for that area of the tooth. Once the gem is removed, cosmetic dentistry may be required to correct the damage caused by dental jewelry.
- The Gems may be made out of materials that are not biocompatible. Constant ingestion of contaminants found in the gems may be dangerous.
Safe Ways to Boost Your Smile
There are many different ways you can improve your smile without putting your oral health at risk. This includes turning to safe and effective cosmetic procedures. Remember — beautiful smiles are not a trend that will ever go out of style; they are timeless.
Boost your smile with one of these cosmetic dentistry procedures:
- Porcelain dental veneers
- Teeth whitening treatments
- Invisalign clear aligners
- Cosmetic bonding
- Metal-free restorations
Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Jewelry
Do dentists approve of any type of dental jewelry?
No, dentists do not recommend any type of dental jewelry. Instead, they prefer to focus on healthy smiles that are enhanced by nothing more than cosmetic dental procedures.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Porcelain veneers can last about 10 to 15 years on average. With exceptional care, they are known to last upwards of 20 years.
