A knocked out tooth needs fast action and urgent treatment. If you want to save your tooth, you need to act quickly. But don’t panic, this guide will tell you everything you need to know to handle this particular dental emergency.
Step 1: Locate and Clean the Tooth
Find the tooth and carefully pick it up by the crown. Avoid touching the roots, as this can cause irreparable damage. Plug the drain and rinse the tooth in cool water to remove any dirt or debris.
Step 2: Reinsert the Tooth
Once the tooth is clean, attempt to put it back in the socket. Bite down on some clean gauze to hold the tooth in place. Do not attempt to put a baby tooth back in the socket, as this could damage the permanent tooth underneath. If you are unable to get the tooth back into the socket successfully, proceed to Step 3. Otherwise skip to Step 4.
Step 3: Preserve the Tooth
If the tooth can’t be reinserted, place it in a cup of milk or saliva. If you happen to have a tooth preservation kit, that is the best option for storing the tooth until you can get to a dentist. Adults can hold the tooth in their mouth, such as in the cheek to preserve it, taking care not to swallow it. Do not try this with children.
Step 4: Contact Your Dentist
Time is of the essence when it comes to saving a knocked out tooth, so be sure to contact your dentist right away. Even if the incident occurs after hours, call and follow the instructions for emergencies. You will need to leave a message and someone will contact you shortly with further instructions. At most, a tooth can remain out of the mouth for about an hour (if stored properly) and still be reinserted.
Treatment for a Knocked Out Tooth
A tooth that has been knocked completely out of the socket may need a root canal. Trauma can cause internal damage that needs to be addressed in order for the tooth to remain healthy after reinsertion. The tooth will also need to be splinted to the other teeth for support while the gums and jaw heal and the socket tightens around the tooth. Depending on the extent of your injuries, a few stitches may be needed to close the gum tissue around the tooth.
Call Kalmar Family Dentistry
In case of a knocked out tooth or other dental emergency, call Kalmar Family Dentistry at 631-673-0670. During office hours we will make arrangements to see you as soon as possible. After hours please leave a message and someone will contact you shortly. If the situation becomes serious or life threatening, call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies
What are the chances that a knocked out tooth can be saved?
In many cases a knocked out tooth can be reinserted with success. Time is one of the most important factors, as well as keeping the tooth moist with milk or saliva. The extent of the damage to the tooth will also affect the chances of successful reinsertion.
Does a knocked out baby tooth need treatment?
If a baby tooth is knocked out before it is ready to be naturally shed, you should seek treatment from your dentist. A space maintainer may be needed to hold the space open for the permanent tooth to come in when it is ready.

How often should my family visit the dentist?

Going to the dentist can be an intimidating experience for a young child. Fear of the unknown is common, but it doesn’t have to become a lifelong problem. There are ways to make the first dental visit stress-free and even fun. Here are some tips to help you and your child have a positive trip to the dentist, the first time and each time after.
Start When They Are Young
The younger your child is when they begin going to the dentist, the less likely they are to be afraid or to develop dental anxiety. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that children have their first dental visit by age one, or within 6 months of their first tooth coming in. Not only does this provide an early assessment of their oral health and development, it serves as an early introduction to the experience of a dental visit. When dental visits are a regular occurrence from an early age, children know what to expect and are more relaxed and cooperative.
Read Books About Going to the Dentist
There are many children’s picture books about going to the dentist. Reading one or a few of these will help toddlers and children know what to expect when they go to the dentist. Looking at the pictures and listening to the words can ease any fear or anxiety they may be feeling. Reading is a positive experience between a parent and a child. Answer any questions they may have without going into too much detail. Avoid talking about pain, drills, or any other potentially intimidating words.
Watch Videos or TV Shows About Dental Visits
You can also find a wide variety of videos or children’s TV shows that depict children going to the dentist. Watching an actual video of a real-life dental visit can help your child know what a dental visit looks like. A TV show with a favorite character going to the dentist without being afraid can boost their confidence. Again, answer your child’s questions while staying positive in your words and demeanor.
Play Up the Fun Parts
When talking to your child about the dentist, focus on the fun parts. Tell them they will receive a goody bag with a new toothbrush and possibly a prize. Talk about how nice the doctors and staff are who will check their teeth and how they will get to choose their favorite flavor of toothpaste or fluoride. These little details can make children excited to go to the dentist.
Try Role Playing
Children love imaginative play. Pretend to be the dentist and count and brush their teeth. Then let them be the dentist and count and brush your teeth. This will also help them know what to expect and alleviate any potential fear or anxiety.
Trust the Team at Kalmar Family Dentistry
If your child is at least a year old and has not yet had their first dental checkup, it is time to schedule an appointment. The doctors and team at Kalmart Family Dentistry have experience working with children and know how to make dental visits fun and relaxing for children and parents. Through compassion and patience we create a positive experience for children that sets the tone for their lifelong view of dental care.
Frequently Asked Questions About the First Dental Visit
What if my child doesn’t cooperate during their dental visit?
We understand that some children will have a difficult time at the dentist. We are patient and kind, giving children the time they need. If necessary, the appointment can be rescheduled for another day.
What if my child doesn’t have any teeth by their first birthday?
Children develop at different rates and their teeth come in at different ages as well. Even if your child does not have any visible teeth by age one, schedule a dental visit. We can evaluate their oral health and provide insight into tooth eruption.
At Kalmart Family Dentistry we provide compassionate care for patients of all ages from babies to adults in a warm and relaxing environment. If your child is at least a year old, it is time for their first dental visit. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Dental X-Rays are a common diagnostic tool used in dentistry. They provide insight into many aspects of oral health that are not readily visible. Dental practices now use digital X-Rays rather than film, resulting in a significant reduction in radiation and clearer images.
If you are the parent or guardian of a young child, you may be wondering when they should get their first dental X-Rays. Here’s what dentists recommend.
Average Age for First Dental X-Rays
Most children should have their first dental X-Rays taken around the age of 5 or 6. This is when the first permanent teeth begin to make an appearance. Some children may need dental X-Rays at an earlier age if their oral health suggests the need for it.
Benefits of Dental X-Rays for Children
- Establish a baseline. Dental X-Rays taken at an early age establish a baseline of oral health that future X-Rays can be compared to.
- Detection of cavities. Digital X-Ray images can show cavities of all sizes, even small ones that may be difficult to see.
- Early detection of potential concerns. Early detection of potential oral health concerns can result in easier and more effective treatment.
- Orthodontic monitoring. Dentists can use dental X-Ray images to monitor orthodontic development and detect the need for interceptive orthodontic treatment, if necessary.
What To Expect During Dental X-Rays
The basic process for dental X-Rays includes the following steps:
- Protective covering. A lead apron or shield is placed over the child’s body to protect their vital organs from radiation exposure. This includes neck protection for the thyroid. Protective coverings are used as precaution; the radiation is minimal and precisely directed to the mouth.
- Positioning. The child will be properly positioned and the machinery will be adjusted to collect the necessary images.
- Imaging. The child will be asked to hold as still as possible for just a few brief seconds while the images are made.
Frequency of Dental X-Rays
In most cases dental X-Rays are taken once a year for patients of all ages, including children. More frequent imaging may be required for specific concerns, such as cavities, orthodontic issues, or abnormalities of the hard or soft tissues.
The Importance of Dental X-Rays
It is normal to question the value of dental care procedures. But in the case of dental X-Rays the benefits greatly outweigh the very minimal risks. When oral health problems are detected in the earliest stages by dental X-Rays, treatment is easier and much more effective. Teeth can be saved rather than extracted and orthodontic treatment can begin early for growth modification to reduce the need for future treatment. Oral cancer risk is very low for children, but in rare cases that do occur, early detection results in improved outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental X-Rays
Are dental X-Rays covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover dental X-Rays once a year. If additional X-Rays are needed for specific diagnostics, those may be covered according to the details of your plan. Contact your insurance provider or refer to your benefits guide for more information.
Are dental X-Rays safe for young children?
Digital X-Rays use a minimal amount of radiation, making them extremely safe for children. Waiting until the age of 5 or 6 increases the safety of dental X-Rays.

About the Cow Harbor Race
The Cow Harbor Race has been held in Northport since 1977 when John Rakucewicz, a local citizen and businessman, first came up with the idea. As an avid runner he felt that the natural beauty of the area made it an excellent location for a charity race, and the town recommended combining it with the Grand Old-Fashioned Cow Harbor Day Parade which had been established just a few years earlier. The race has been held annually with only a few exceptions over the past 40+years.
Run or Walk for Charity
The Cow Harbor Race is a charity run/walk that supports the Special Olympics and other local organizations including the Northwell Health Foundation, the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry, Save the Sound, the Northport American Legion Post 694, and the Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary. There are many national sponsors of the event from Gatorade to Nike, as well as local sponsors such as Sand City Brewing Company and Giunta’s Meat Farms.

Dental jewelry, known as a tooth gem, attaches to the surface of your enamel and adds a sparkle to your smile.
The idea may be fun and exciting. But, before you go through with it, know the risks. Dental jewelry is not conducive to your oral health and it can leave you with a long list of dental issues that need to be addressed.
What is Dental Jewelry?
Dental jewelry refers to small gems that are attached to the tooth’s surface using a strong adhesive. They aren’t permanent but will remain in place for at least 6 months or so, generally longer.
Some take the bedazzling a step further and adhere gems to a dental crown and cap the entire tooth — or even a row of teeth.
Made famous by celebrities and influencers over the last few years, the trend has taken off. Unfortunately, as many seek to have gems of their own, they fail to realize the dangers of adhering them to teeth.
Dangers of Dental Jewelry
Tooth enamel has to be etched for a tooth gem to be placed properly and securely. This creates a better grip using the bonding agent. While the compromised area is only as big as the gem or gems used, the idea of scraping away this strong protective outer layer of your tooth is a bit concerning.
Your enamel is what shields your teeth from decay. When you start removing it, your teeth can be at greater risk for decay and enamel erosion.
A few other dangers of dental jewelry include:
- An increased risk of tooth decay resulting from trapped food particles and bacteria under and around the gem.
- Bad breath due to the buildup of plaque and bacteria.
- Discoloration that is caused by the inability to care for that area of the tooth. Once the gem is removed, cosmetic dentistry may be required to correct the damage caused by dental jewelry.
- The Gems may be made out of materials that are not biocompatible. Constant ingestion of contaminants found in the gems may be dangerous.
Safe Ways to Boost Your Smile
There are many different ways you can improve your smile without putting your oral health at risk. This includes turning to safe and effective cosmetic procedures. Remember — beautiful smiles are not a trend that will ever go out of style; they are timeless.
Boost your smile with one of these cosmetic dentistry procedures:
- Porcelain dental veneers
- Teeth whitening treatments
- Invisalign clear aligners
- Cosmetic bonding
- Metal-free restorations
Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Jewelry
Do dentists approve of any type of dental jewelry?
No, dentists do not recommend any type of dental jewelry. Instead, they prefer to focus on healthy smiles that are enhanced by nothing more than cosmetic dental procedures.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Porcelain veneers can last about 10 to 15 years on average. With exceptional care, they are known to last upwards of 20 years.
