As summer is winding down and the first cool breezes of fall begin to blow, one of the most iconic events of Long Island gears up for another memorable day. The Great Cow Harbor 10K Run is an annual event bringing 5,000 runners and even more supporters from all over the east coast and beyond.

This year’s Cow Harbor Run will take place September 20th, 2025 in Northport, NY. If you’re thinking about joining the fun, here’s everything you need to know.

History of the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run

The idea for the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run began in 1977 from the inspiration of John Rakucewicz, a local resident and running enthusiast. With over 1,000 participants, the first race was a huge success and became an annual event. Now the Cow Harbor Race is a beloved local tradition that celebrates the natural beauty of the area while supporting a myriad of national and local charities.
